If I’d known then what I know now, I’d never have tried to reclaim my crown.

I think I’ve found it when I see Ashton Cole—my first crush, my first kiss—at my new school. But Ash isn’t who he used to be. He’s the king. And me… well, I’m not going down without a fight—even with the lies and secrets filling the school halls around us.

Please note this is a mature YA read and contains bullying/sex/bad language.

The crown is mine. Revenge was dealt. But at what cost?

I've destroyed those who have wronged me, but lost a piece of myself along the way.

The boy I love, hates me and I hate him. We've both done things that can't be forgiven and as much as the connection between us burns, I'm not sure it's enough to fix what we broke.

I'm a broken queen, in a tainted kingdom and maybe I got what I deserved...

Excerpt

He leans in, kissing me softly one last time, his hand cupping my face with a tenderness that breaks me. A single tear rolls down my face, and he brushes it away with his thumb as he releases my lips.

“I wi—”

I cut Ash off. “Don’t. Don’t say it. I’ll see you around, okay?”

My emotions shut down as a cold numbness seeps over my skin. Hurt and longing fill Ash’s face, but it can’t reach me over the invisible wall I’ve built between us. I’m ice. Frozen down to my very core so my heart will never feel again.

Reaching for the door, I pull the handle and push it open. The chilly autumn air wraps around us. Climbing out, I look back one last time, a smile on my lips that doesn’t quite fit. It’s as if I’ve detached from my body—I move and talk, but none of it really sinks in.

“Rose,” Ash gasps, reaching out for me.

His pain splinters the ice, shattering through the walls I built to survive. I feel it right down to my core, and for a moment, we reach out to each other across time and space. The kids we used to be and the adults we’ve become clashing and becoming one.

“It’s okay,” I lie, because it never will be again. “It’s okay.”

The car pulls away and Ash’s face grows smaller and smaller through the back window of the car. The world carries on around me, but I can’t move, even when the car is gone, and Ash’s pain is too far away to reach me. I stand, and I watch. To move would mean it’s over. To move would mean the line has been drawn and, for all my bravo and sass, the truth is I’m not sure I’m going to be okay tomorrow.

My secrets are out. My closet is wide open. They’ve no ammo left to fire. Except there’s no point firing at an opponent who’s already broken. I’ll hold my head up high. I’ll plaster a smile onto my face. But unless I find and expose their secrets, the war will be over before it has begun.

Review

Faking It as the MaidFaking It as the Maid by Emily James
Kats rating: 4 of 5 stars

This book was the perfect choice for a light read while I was away with the family. The premise of the storyline had me expecting it to be a little predictable in the essence of the trope of poor girl falls for the rich guy but I was pleasantly surprised. I started reading and couldn't put it down
Avery has had a hard life so far, but she is determined not to fall into the slot society wants to put her in, living in the cheap and run-down estates of the UK, where the impoverished are forced to pay rent to greedy housing corporations who don't give a dam about the niceties of heating or working lifts (elevators).
Being an Expat who recently spent time in the UK and saw the huge changes that have occurred since I left, I felt this book had a really good grasp of how the poor are held back and are unable to get out of the poverty cycle.
I liked the way the author puts Avery and Ben into each other's paths and how each moment after gives the reader an unpredictable set of circumstance, pre-conceived ideas and fate that make both Ben and Avery learn about themselves and each other.
This is the first book of this author I have read and I will be checking more of her work soon

Abandoned at a hospital when she was only three years old, Aubrey Ross grew up as a ward of the state, passed from one foster family to the next. Having endured years of abuse and neglect, she’s become hardened to the world around her.
She’s flirted with depression and anxiety, and she’s haunted by premonitions. When a strange man approaches Aubrey with information about her past, she knows her life is about to change. Inside the envelope is the deed to a house in Ohio—her ancestral home.
When Aubrey arrives in Rossdale, the town named after her family, she immediately experiences situations she cannot explain. She hears voices, sees apparitions, and has vivid visions of tragedies she can scarcely comprehend. Aubrey comes to realize she is reliving events that have happened to those who came before her.
Then she meets Hank Metzger, the town’s sheriff, whose family has an eerie connection to her own. As the secrets of Desolate Ridge are unearthed, Aubrey begins to understand her destiny is tied to Hank’s in a way she cannot escape.
