Blurb

The Explosive Conclusion to the Award-Winning Resistance Series To Deny Freedom is to Deny the Human Spirit. Fugitive Resistance fighter Tommy Bailey has come out of hiding to help rescue Careen Catecher from the clutches of the Office of Civilian Safety and Defense, where she’s been held and interrogated for information about the rebel group. The OCSD is poised to launch the Cerberean Link, a security device that will put all minors under constant surveillance under the guise of protecting them. Fearful that OCSD director Madalyn Davies’s bid for control won’t stop there, the Resistance puts its own plan in motion to sabotage the Link and oust Madalyn from the directorship. Just when everything seems leveraged in the Resistance’s favor, treachery, lies, and long-held secrets threaten to derail it all. Will even a life together on the run be impossible for Tommy and Careen? Or will the Resistance’s efforts convince the public to put their fears aside and demand freedom? Through it all, Tommy refuses to believe Careen’s loyalties have shifted away from the Resistance, and he’s willing to assume any risk to reconnect with her. Will they be able to trust each other when it matters most?

Review

Revolt (Resistance, #4)Revolt by Tracy Lawson
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

*** I voluntarily reviewed this book, I gained no monetary incentives nor was I specifically requested to review the book, these are my honest ramblings and I hope you enjoy reading them - kat***

This is the conclusion to the story of Careen, Tommy and the rest of the resistance who are fighting the OCSD
They are trying to stop the Cerberean Link, The tracker that Atari the Tech head designed, he is working for both the Resistance team AND the OCSD! OR does he have his own agenda???? You will have to read the book to find out.

The storyline as it went was a slow burn but I was still glued to my kindle right to the very end.

As a conclusion, I think Ms Lawson did a good job of wrapping up the storyline, BUT with scope for maybe some further stories - Once you were linked it was permanent, so who knows what could happen!

What I found the most compelling about this series is that it's not so unbelievable - and to be honest America seems to be on the precipice of a big shift with the current administration, it starts small... taking away your rights one at a time, and before the country knows, its media is controlled and so are your liberties.... sound familiar (scarily so in my opinion)
But let's not get into how I feel Trump is beginning to sound scarily like Madalyn Davies!!!!

Ms Lawson's writing style is really enjoyable, it flows well, is fresh and interesting but at the same time modern and fits with the Dystopian genre.

This series will suit any reader that enjoys YA dystopian novels.

Review

***I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader's Copy of this book for my honest review & I thank the publishers Harper Collins NZ***
Celestine is the most flawed person in Humming, but as she hides from the whistleblowers and Judge Crevan she doesn't know who to trust.
But it seems that the population is unhappy, but scared to act against the Guild in fear that they too may be deemed 'Flawed'.
I found this book hard to put down, it's faster paced than book one, and Celestine is finding that she has more courage than she thought.
Not only is this book a good story, the underlying message that it gives the reader is a prompt to look within yourself and see how you would fare if you lived in Celestine's world. How would I have reacted, would I have ignored the injustice that happened on that bus? Or would I have stood up for what I believed was right?
Celestine made her choice in book one, and in this book, she is living with the consequences and dealing with being on the run from the system who now realise that she could bring them all down.
Those who offer to help her, have their own agenda, the task of just surviving seems impossible, will Celestine not only survive, but bring about the end of an unjust regime?
I suggest you buy this book and see for yourself.
The ending was brilliant, the tension built and Ms. Ahern kept it going until the end. The last chapter I would love to quote, as it is a good one to remember - but I don't do spoiler reviews, so I will just keep it in my heart for when I need a pep talk.
but one I will quote that touched me while reading is this:
end of Chapter 59: "And there are the very special people in our lives who have the endless capacity to love us for all of our flaws"
This was after Celestine and her mother speak to each other. As a mother myself, this really did resonate with me, and as a daughter too... even at my advancing years, when my mother shows her pride in what I do - it means the world to me.
I will most definitely be re-reading this series in the future and checking out the author's Contemporary genre too.

Kat's rating: 4 of 5 stars
#4.5 stars
***I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader's Copy of this book for my honest review & I thank the publishers Harper Collins NZ***
This book was a bit slow going at first, but boy I was hooked when it got a third of the way through, well basically from when Celestine goes from being the 'Perfect' girl that society now expects.
This story is based in a fictional Dystopian state where a Highland Castle dominates the city, Where Judge and Jury sit. Where strict rules apply and the Guild enforce, they have become more powerful than the government of the land, and everyone is under their surveillance, break one rule and you will be punished by being branded with the letter 'F' For Flawed. This reminded me of the book 'The Scarlet Letter where the heroine was made to wear the Scarlett Letter A for Adultery.
The branding location depends on their error of judgment;
for example on your right-hand means 'Theft from Society'; for lying it's their tongue; for disloyalty it's over their heart and for stepping out of line with society, its on the sole of their right foot. - Barbaric and obviously used to cause fear and compliance.
This is where the basis of this story grows, of what happens when a governing body gets too much power, grows so big that the Government it works for no longer controls it, and are the body who were brought in to ensure that honesty and integrity were upheld in society, ultimately become the monster they were trying to eradicate.
I would like to touch on this first before I get to the actual characters and the events that unfold when Celestine gets on that bus...
You can't describe in minute detail how a society runs or how their laws were put in place without any discourse from the people that it effects, but I saw a few comments when researching this series when asked if I would like to review, and although they are entitled to their opinions, I feel like the world that Ms. Ahern created could quite easily come into being, people have been and are subjugated and oppressed throughout the world.
Ms. Ahern's world of the flawed brought up memories of the Apartheid and when we got to the way the children were treated it reminded me of the Stolen Generation where the Australian government stole the children of the indigenous people between 1910 until 1970, 60 years of trying to indoctrinate their beliefs, on institutionalising innocent children, all under the noses of 'Respectable people' who thought it was a good thing, but in reality it was a horrendous thing to do to children. So thats my take on that, and I think this book does a good job in showing what humans are possible of doing, whether in fear or ignorance.
Onto the characters:
Celestine, thought she was perfect, and I must admit, she was boringly Stepford at the very beginning, she saw everything in black and white, right and wrong and no in between, and I found that her Sister Juniper was much more interesting because she spoke up and asked questions - and this reason was why Celestine felt her slightly older sister was on a slippery slope heading for being branded as 'Flawed'. The sisters are beautiful, dark eyes, long curly hair from their mixed heritage. Celestine is all 'pastels' and Juniper is the opposite with her black clothing, but they look alike.
BUT One moment of compassion, of 'doing the right thing' will turn Celestine's world upside down.
this scene was very moving the author wrote it in a way that was really in character to her 'logical law abiding' personality, Celestine sees an imbalance, and she tries to correct it, but soon learns that the world is more complicated than she ever imagined.
OK onto the male characters, we first meet Art, blonde hair, blue eyes, the perfect boyfriend for our perfect Celestine, Then there is 'Bosco' or as the rest of the community know Art's father as, Judge Crevan who is one of the top judges who decide if you are Flawed.
When one person has power and no accountability there is a chance they will corrupt that power and Judge Crevan is a spectacular example of this, his sudden about turn from jovial friend and father of her boyfriend Art to becoming a power-mad dictator. I look forward to seeing what Ms. Ahern has in store or him in book 2 - Perfect
Then we have Carrick, the brooding, muscle-bound bad boy who Celestine meets in the cells of the Guild holding area, Clear cells where you are on display 24/7 - a nice touch to make a prisoner feel anxious of their impending verdict.
I really did not see a 'Love Triangle' it's more that Celestine builds a bond through shared experiences, whether this leads onto a relationship in book 2 of the duology we will have to see.
Now to the bits that have struck a cord within me,
"He is a police officer whom I once trusted, admired, felt protected by....I learned this at school. I learned all this. Why doesn't he know these rules I was taught, that he was surely taught, too? Why doesn't anybody in the real world do what we're taught?"
Actually, the bus scene and this one above reminded me of the struggles that hit the 50's and the Civil rights movement.
but for the one that I stuck a post-it note under was this one; As I feel this quite often:
Sometimes I'll read a sentence and it will make me sit up, jolt me, because it is something that I have recently felt but never said out loud. I want to reach into the page and tell the character that I understand them, that they are not alone, that I am not alone, that its okay to feel like this
The worst scene was the 'party' scene, but it reflected how even in their supposedly perfect world, teenagers will always pick on the weakest and if they have parents in power, get away with it.
All in all this is a good Dystopian book that has a lot of messages for the young... I enjoyed reading it.

The Resistance Series By Tracy Lawson - Jenni's Review @TracySLawson

About the series

This series has a prequel that is free at time of posting (check before you grab a copy) here

Who do you trust when your world unravels and everything you believed is a lie?

For the past fifteen years, The Office of Civilian Safety and Defense has guarded the public against the rampant threat of terrorism. Teenagers Tommy and Careen have never known life without Civilian Restrictions. For them, there's no social media. No one is allowed to gather in public places or attend concerts or sporting events. Only a small, select group of adults have driving privileges, but it's a small price to pay for safety.

Now a new, more deadly, terrorist threat looms: airborne chemical weapons that can be activated without warning. The OCSD is ready with an antidote to counteract the effects of the toxins. Three drops a day is all it takes. It's a small price to pay for health.

The day the disaster sirens signal the dreaded attack, Tommy shares his last dose with Careen, even though doing so might hasten his death. It's a small price to pay for a friend.Follow Tommy and Careen as they uncover a web of lies and deceit reaching to the highest levels of the United States government and join an underground resistance group that's determined to expose the truth.

"Counteract is a novel for our times, but with a decidedly different plot twist. Most dystopian thrillers focus on the devastating consequences of the unleashed virus or poison on society, community, and the individual. They become character studies of the protagonists and antagonists.

"Tracy Lawson's novel asks an even more disturbing question--what if the real culprit was someone or something we trusted? I thought The Hunger Games might be the Millennial generation's version of George Orwell's 1984. Now, I think Counteract and the Resistance Series are more primed to take that spot."--SR Staley, author of St. Nic, Inc., and the Tortuga Bay series.

Jenni's Reviews

Counteract (Resistance #1)Counteract by Tracy Lawson
Jenni's rating: 4 of 5 stars

***Review has been gifted in exchange for my honest opinion and on behalf of Kats Book Promotions/ Katsindiebookblog.*** This is a dystopia thriller at its best. The US as you know it now, no longer exists. Instead of states, you are in a quadrant. Instead of a president, you have a Quadrant Master. With an imminent threat lurking around the corner causing airborne attacks, the government created an antidote to ward off the threat. Or is this just all a ploy to find out how loyal and willing you are towards the government?
In the beginning you immediately get to know the main characters of the story. I was slightly confused in the beginning, however the more I read, the easier it became to read. I was curious as to why you kept on jumping from character to character, but you quickly understand why that is the case. These characters are all linked in some form of fashion. You will just have to read to find out how.
You will be kept on your toes with this fast paced story. When you think you have something figured out, think again. Easy answers are not in here. You will not be disappointed with this story!

Resist (Resistance #2)Resist by Tracy Lawson
Jenni's rating: 4 of 5 stars

***Review has been gifted in exchange for my honest opinion and on behalf of Kats Book Promotions/ Katsindiebookblog.*** If you were happy with the first book, you will not be disappointed with the next book in this series. The writing gets better and better with each book, if that’s possible. You are immediately sucked right back in where you were left off in the first book.
Tommy and Careen are on their journey to save everyone, if that’s even possible. They are put through many twists and turns while working on their relationship. With dealing with the resistance, can everyone work together to get the job done, can relationships stay in tacked? The only way to find out is to continue reading into this great series.

Ignite (Resistance #3)Ignite by Tracy Lawson
Jenni's rating: 4 of 5 stars

***Review has been gifted in exchange for my honest opinion and on behalf of Kats Book Promotions/ Katsindiebookblog.*** This is possibly the best book of the series. Each character is definitely showing their true colors which all the turmoil that is going on. There are so many different personalities, however they blend really well together.
With all that is going on; the OCSD doing everything they can to retain its power, the Resistance doing whatever they can to protect the population from the OCSD, Tommy is doing whatever it takes to free Careen. There is plenty action going on in this book which will keep you drawn to it.
This is a really a great series all around; between characters, plots, and the fact you are constantly own your toes waiting to see what happens next. This should be everyone’s next read!

Review: The Fire Sermon (The Fire Sermon #1) by Francesca Haig @FrancescaHaig @HarpercollinsNZ

The Fire Sermon (The Fire Sermon, #1)

The Hunger Games meets Cormac McCarthy's The Road in this richly imagined first novel in a new postapocalyptic trilogy by award-winning poet Francesca Haig.
Four hundred years in the future, the Earth has turned primitive following a nuclear fire that laid waste to civilization and nature. Though the radiation fallout has ended, for some unknowable reason every person is born with a twin. Of each pair one is an Alpha - physically perfect in every way - and the other an Omega burdened with deformity, small or large.
With the Council ruling an apartheid-like society, Omegas are branded and ostracized while the Alphas have gathered the world's sparse resources for themselves. Though proclaiming their superiority, for all their effort Alphas cannot escape one harsh fact: Whenever one twin dies, so does the other. Cass is a rare Omega, one burdened with psychic foresight. While her twin, Zach, gains power on the Alpha Council, she dares to dream the most dangerous dream of all: equality. For daring to envision a world in which Alphas and Omegas live side by side as equals, both the Council and the Resistance have her in their sights.

Review

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
***3.5 Stars *** Rounded up to 4 due to the overall enjoyment of the book.
This Dystopian post-apocalyptic plot had me devouring the pages as I started, but where as the writing style and worldbuilding was strong in the first part, once we got past Chapter 10 I felt as if the writing began to get a little rushed and the building of the scene dwindled with it.
The premise of this story was a very intriguing one for me, the symbiotic relationship between twins, the world devastated by nuclear war, without machinery or technology... but soon I began to have more questions to why if a world where twins are linked, where each twin can feel pain when the other twin was injured... why would not starvation and weakness affect the Alpha twin also?
The points I like in this book are the way the author has shown how the Human race can continue to oppress the weak and strive to be even more arrogant that the world we know today, and in her version that is set 400+ years into the future after the 'Blast' ago inevitably turned this world to ash... and where the population is divided into an apartheid society.
The Earth has been shattered and although there are parts that have recovered and the Human race still manages to survive it was not without its consequences. All births are twins ( well Humans anyway, although this was one of the many questions I was left with after reading, why are there not similar occurrences in the Animal Kingdom?)
One twin is perfect, the Alpha, but the second twin is the Omega, the unwanted, deformed whether severely or not, they are always barren, only Alpha's can reproduce.
Now this idea is a good one, one of my favourite Star Trek episodes was where the Bynar race were introduced
Yes I am a geek and I love it!
The Omega's are unwanted, seen to represent the Blight the earth has befallen and when they try to dispose of these deformed babies, the parents soon realise that to 'Kill' the Omega is to kill the Alpha, Natures genetic finger to the arrogant race that has all but destroyed it... to keep the perfect child you must allow the disfigured one to survive also.
I do like how Ms Francesca Haig shows how the society of Alpha's and the Omega's first existed, and how that anything from 'Before' is Taboo, but as we come to present day, when our Heroine Cass is captured, I had a few doubts on how the storyline was progressing.
Some of these ideas don't compute, if each twin can feel pain, a broken bone or death, how is it that starvation does not? IF everything was forbidden and unused for 400 years how did they work out how to use the equipment described and used as the story progressed?
Anyway - back to the story.
I was engrossed in the childhood of Cass and her twin Zach, both born perfect, a rare occurrence in the births, the children soon start to show which one is the Alpha and which is the Omega, but with no physical differences their parents play a waiting game... when an Omega has no physical anomalies it is more likely that they have a mental one, they are a 'Seer' - they have visions, of past or future, it varies, but what does not is the madness that consumes them eventually.
Now Zach knows that it is Cass but no one believes him, Cass has become a master at hiding the visions, but as the twins reached their 13th birthday Zach finally tricks Cass into revealing herself.
She's Branded and cast out as soon as the brand heals sufficiently to stop her dying of sepsis.
Life was isolating as a child, both twins being shunned by the community at large, and later by their parents, but Cass didn't care, as long as she had Zach.
But it takes her a while to realise that hiding who she was for so long may have made her more isolated when she is eventually cast out to fend for herself.
She ends up in her Aunt's old house but is mistrusted by the other Omega's because of her abilities.
Life quickly becomes a daily struggle for survival as food becomes more scarce, either by drought or by the Tithes the Alpha's extract off the Omega's.
Cass can see how things are getting worse for the Omega's and when she finally hears that her twin Zach is part of the Council enforcing these, she refuses to believe that he would stoop to such atrocities. But it seems that Cass's lengthy deception has twisted his perception of the twin-ship bond and he is determined to rid the world of the Omega's for good.
Cass finally can't ignore the visions but its too late to react and she is captured by an Alpha raiding party and locked up in the 'Keeping Rooms', where Omegas are kept either for leverage or safety depending on who holds the key, for Cass its to ensure her twin's enemies can't use her against him, and her only visitors are "The Confessor" another Omega Seer who works with her Twin Zach, now known as "The Reformer". They want the answers of her visions and will not stop until she reveals them...
Her visions, they hold the key to the 'Island' a place only rumored to be where the Omega resistance fights back against the Alpha rule. So when finally Cass gets the courage to escape ( 4 years locked up is a long time and this also had me wondering about how on earth she had the strength to run and on her way... (view spoiler)
BUT that said I continued to enjoy the relationship grow between our escapees as they followed Cass's 'feelings' on which way to go. With any adventure there were some tense moments and some nice almost sweet moments, but this book isn't what I would call a romance by a long shot, our pair although start a fledgling relationship, don't have the time to pursue it, and I am glad that the author kept it that way.
I did feel that Cass, although not a weak and wimpy heroine didn't seem to grow much throughout this book, where as Kit, even with his after affects of the release from the tank seemed to evolve into a somewhat of a willing participant in finding the resistance.
I will give Ms Haig a point for keeping me in the dark to who his twin was, but looking back I can see where there were little clues left.
I did enjoy reading this book, and after the ending of this one, I am looking forward to finding out what The Map of Bones has in store for Cass.

Review: Ignite (Resistance #3) by Tracy Lawson @TracySLawson

I am going to be stalking this author to keep track of the next book release!

30356956Blurb

The Greatest Risk is to Take No Risk At All.
Nationwide food shortages have sparked civil unrest, and the Office of Civilian Safety and Defense’s hold on the people is slipping. The Resistance’s efforts to hasten the OCSD’s demise have resulted in disaster, with Tommy Bailey and Careen Catecher taking the blame for the ill-fated mission in OP-439.
Both teens struggle to survive the circumstances that force them into the national spotlight—and this time, they’re on opposite sides. On the run and exiled from the Resistance members in BG-098, Tommy makes his way to a Resistance safe house in the capital.
The OCSD is preparing to monitor all under-eighteens with the Cerberean Link, a device that protects them against hunger and sickness and can even locate them if they’re lost. Tommy’s now living in close quarters with Atari, an operative who’s been assigned to sabotage the Link. But does Atari plan to use it for his own purposes?
Through it all, Tommy refuses to believe Careen’s loyalties have shifted away from the Resistance, and he’s willing to assume any risk to reconnect with her. Will they be able to trust each other when it matters most?

Review

My rating: 5 of 5 stars
*** I voluntarily reviewed this book, I gained no monetary incentives nor was I specifically requested to review the book, these are my honest ramblings and I hope you enjoy reading them - kat***
PS - I wrote my review via the Goodreads App on my phone only for it to disappear leaving only the line -this is not a trilogy below?????????? #Gremlins at work! so lets try #take2
Okay. .. this series is not a trilogy - so be warned, but YAY the story continues!
This third installment was a tense one,
With food shortages and Careens messages via Peoplecam there is wide spread civil unrest, and OCSD's hold on the situation is slipping under the leadership of Madalyn.
But the Resistance is just as unorganised and Max causes their efforts to back fire with is so called plan to help... with its tragic outcome Tommy and Careen are blamed and Max is made out to be a hero!
Careen ends up getting caught and she is in for a very rough ride, and Tommy finally has to grow up and accept responsibility for his actions - and sets off to help rescue Careen.
The OCSD next plan in nationwide control of the people is the 'Cerberean Link', a device the OCSD will say is to protect. But is it? Being under constant surveilance by the OCSD to me sounds like being tagged and on house arrest to me!
The Double agent Atari, designed the Link. But is he on the side of the resistance? or does he have his own agenda - we are yet to find out.
So what did I think about this latest book in this series - It was a very good story that showed that being in the Resistance isn't as simple as it may first seem.
The Characters are all at odds to what the next step should be, Mitch the Resistance leader seems to have a secret agenda too.
At the end of this book, I learned that there are no black and whites, but constant shades of greys - will Tommy and Careen's blossoming relationship survive her capture? has she been broken beyond repair?
These characters have tough decisions to make...
What is the fate of the US Population - Being drugged into a submissive army may have been stalled for now, but all the kids being ' chipped' may just give the OCSD enough leverage that the adult population would submit to any demand to keep their ofspring safe!
I guess we will have to wait for the 4th book in the series to find out. - Thank goodness its not too far off in the future! ( OMG did I just say that! - I have yet to start my xmas shopping!!! I AM NOT READY FOR 2017!!!!!!)

A mid-life career change has yielded thus far Counteract, Resist, and Ignite in the YA dystopian Resistance Series, and a nonfiction history book entitled Fips, Bots, Doggeries, and More.
Tracy, who is married with one college-aged daughter and two spoiled cats, splits her time between Dallas, Texas and Columbus, Ohio.

synopsis
Can a demon’s heart of ice be thawed? Ash may have escaped death several times, but now things are finally looking up. The doppelganger is gone, she’s dating Leo, and the Venantium are staying away from her - for now. But a new threat rises from the Darkworld, and only the fortune-teller knows the true extent of the danger they’re in. Lucifer, a sorcerer who did the impossible and cheated death through escaping to the Darkworld, is on the move. Now his second-in-command, Mephistopheles the demon, is loose in our world - and will do anything to win Ash over to his side. The Venantium fear a repeat of the Demon Wars, the demonic invasion that wiped out the Blackstone family. But there’s more to those events than the records reveal. When Ash finds the lost diary of Melivia Blackstone, she starts to dig into the past to find the town’s forgotten history - leading to a revelation that shocks her to the core. Leo seems to be the only person Ash can rely on, yet can she truly open up to him, knowing what she is? Blackstone’s dark history is rising to the surface, and it seems even memory can lie. The worst betrayal waits around the corner, and Ash has to decide whether to trust Leo with her darkest secret, even when it has the potential to destroy them both…

Demon Heart (Darkworld, #3)Demon Heart by Emma L. Adams Jenni's rating: 4 of 5 stars I am giving this review on behalf of Kats Book Promotions/ Katsindiebookblog. Such a great addition to this series, and yet how the ending is, could there be a possibility of another one in the future? I do hope so! Granted there is not as much action as the previous books, this book still keeps you on your toes, and the fights are still awesome! Ash and her friends are now forced to deal with yet another evil, known as Lucifer, who has seemed to escape the Darkworld along with his 2nd in command Mephistopheles. Could it be possible that there will be another Demon War? Or will Ash and her friends be able to save it, yet again? With so much going on, Ash is still hiding secrets. Will she finally let them be known or will she continue to hide them? Ash and Leo are finally together but yet she is still holding back in the relationship. Can she truly open up and fully enjoy their relationship? Or will it have the potential to completely destroy them? This is a quick, yet a good read with quite a few twists in the story. A great and unique writing style as well. I would definitely recommend this book! View all Jenni's reviews

  AUTHOR BIO

Emma spent her childhood creating imaginary worlds to compensate for a disappointingly average reality, so it was probably inevitable that she ended up writing speculative fiction. She was born in Birmingham, UK, which she fled at the first opportunity to study English Literature at Lancaster University. In her three years at Lancaster, she hiked up mountains, skydived in Australia, and endured a traumatic episode involving a swarm of bees in the Costa Rican jungle. She also entertained her creative writing group and baffled her tutors by submitting strange fantasy tales featuring dragons and supernatural monsters to workshops. These included her first publication, a rather bleak dystopian piece, and a disturbing story about a homicidal duck (which she hopes will never see the light of day).

Now a reluctant graduate, Emma refuses to settle down and be normal. When not embarking on wild excursions and writing fantasy novels, she edits and proofreads novels for various publishing houses and reads an improbable number of books. Emma is currently working on the Alliance series, a multiple-universe adult fantasy featuring magic, monsters, cool gadgets and inappropriate humour. Her upper-YA urban fantasy Darkworld series is published by Curiosity Quills Press.
