Living in a domed society can only mean one thing for the Humans and Metas. Chaos.
Reviled banshee Aqulla Dayshon sees death, feels the last moments of a victim’s life and senses the echoes they leave behind. They call for vengeance, and she is helpless to deny their cries, to deny her very nature.

Intra Jaylon Rowe is the law within the Complex. When a series of murders hit the community, he enlists Aqulla’s help. But solving the murders won’t be easy.
Boundaries will be pushed, and rules broken. And as lines are crossed and passion ignites, a banshee’s call will scream.

Death's Echo (The Complex)Death's Echo by Rachel M. Raithby
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

*** I Beta Read this book, before the final edit.***

Rachel M Raithby has ventured into a slightly different genre with Death's Echo, with its Sci-fi off world vibe, but it was an easy read, we get to experience the struggles that Aqulla Dayshon, a Banshee who has to fight her very nature to survive in The Complex, with Death's Echo surrounding her she finds each day a torment, will this drive her to madness? Will she give in to the insistent echos of the victims demanding that she give them their justice?

I really liked Aqulla, she was a strong character who had to deal with a never ending pressure of being surrounded by other Meta's and Human's who had killed, trying to survive as best she could, in the end she has to let someone in, she never suspected she would fall for him, but he was someone to lean on, her heart demanded it, but giving into her heart may just have put them both in danger.

I don't want to spoil this book so I am not going to give much more.

It has romance and a HEA that Rachel always promises to give us, its got suspense and action, I guess the only downside was it was a Novella, and soon I had finished it and I didn't want to, I wanted to stay in this world, Rachel had written.

I look forward to reading the final version, as I didn't actually get to read the Epilogue, but I was promised there was a HEA! and I will update my review then.

***I voluntarily reviewed this book for Katsindiebookblog, and I gained no monetary incentives nor was I specifically requested to review the book.***

Another great read by Rachel, stepping away from some paranormal you are thrown into a bit of Sci-Fi, I’m highly impressed by the diversity of this great author! There aren’t too many reads out there that involve Banshees, but when I do see them, I love seeing how authors interpret them and I was not disappointed here. Aqulla is doing everything she can to survive The CompleX. However in the process, she seems to be drawn to someone she least expects, but in doing so it seems to have put both of their lives in danger. Can the battle be won, can an HEA happen?
This is a short story which explains what The CompleX is and what exactly are Death’s Echo’s. Hopefully, this is a brief of what could be coming in the future from Rachel? One can only hope!

Blurb

Running her fandom-themed store and specialty coffee bar keeps her nerdy heart busy after one too many relationship disappointments. Until the man she can’t manage to forget calls. Charlie’s coming to The Hamptons for a two-week vacation. She’s going to be his host—nothing more. She’d fallen under the spell of his bedroom eyes and roguish charm once before, and it nearly wrecked her. Charlotte can’t risk the same mistake twice. But love knows no boundaries when two hearts collide.

Jenni's rating: 5 of 5 stars

***I voluntarily reviewed this book for Katsindiebookblog, and I gained no monetary incentives nor was I specifically requested to review the book.*** What happens when a one night stand, love them and leave them, seems to turn your emotions into more? Charlie didn’t want anything more than that, however he could not take his mind off of one lady in particular, Charlotte. So what do you do to get a particular person off your mind for good? You see them one last time and hope it resolve any issues. With a plan in place, Charlie makes his way to the Hamptons and hires Charlotte has his host. Charlotte, doing the professional thing, will do her job for 2 weeks and continue on with her life, maybe? Both of these fun loving characters have residual feelings for each other. Can these 2 work their personal feelings out of themselves, or is it possible there is more between them that they realize?
This story was very well written, and keeps you going from the moment you start reading. There are plenty of laughs to have. These authors do an excellent job of having you fall in love with the characters. You can easily feel what these characters feel. This is definitely a great, good hearted read so far this year. I look forward to more writings from these authors. I can’t wait to get sucked into another new world.

When Two Hearts Collide
Excerpts
Game of Hearts Novel 3

What would break me out of the monotony I found myself in? Some days, it felt like there was no difference between home life and pub life. Like a tether between the two, I walked. Only the faces changed sometimes. The selection of people I could align myself with, whether it was friends, or just some pretty face to help me scratch an itch. The latter, being of my own choosing, never once sparked a need for more.
It was a lonely life I led, but it was the only way I’d ever known. The scary part was that I knew I wasn’t getting any younger. The mirror was proof of that. Before I knew it, I’d turn out just like my uncle Dan. Bitter and resentful toward all his youthful misadventures. All the wasted time that floated in the in between of his life and he’d never once stopped to question his choices. His decisions. Yet, on the flip side of that, he loved me. Loved me enough to give me the one thing that mattered most to him. The pub. And I’d give it right back if it meant he lived. But he didn’t, and no matter how much I wanted to, I couldn’t go back in time and make it right. Make him proud. Show him that his belief in me mattered and I’d spent every day since he left me proving I was a better person. A changed man.
Would he be disappointed in my one and only flaw?
Sex was an escape for me. It allowed me to purge myself of the need to step back into the dark world I’d left behind and vowed never to go back to.
The shattering reality of it, though? I couldn’t help but question it all. Couldn’t help but wonder what could be different if I stepped out of what was comfortable and shook off the dregs of the cloying feeling of melancholy that clung to me night and day.
How could I find out what was wrong with me, when I had no idea where to start?
~Charlie Williams

Years later, I could still recall his voice. Smooth and rich like whiskey, burning against my skin as he ran his finger down the length of my neck. I’d been under his control, hypnotized by the swirling look of fire in his eyes that promised pleasure beyond my wildest imagination, and my imagination was vast.
I stupidly said yes, even when I knew I shouldn’t. Even though I’d been warned he wasn’t tamable.
But I wasn’t looking to tame.
Memories of that night flooded my head in heated flashes. Legs and arms tangled together. Lips never breaking contact. Fistfuls of hair and strings of erotic words I shamefully recanted in my fantasies ever since.
~Charlotte Mackay

Every so often, she’d look over at me, almost as if checking to see if I was still there, and the smile she wore would waver slightly. A look I couldn’t quite put my finger on… sadness maybe… would fill her eyes, and I realized, at that moment, I made her nervous. Uncomfortable even, because we both knew there was something between us, and all I had to do was put a little more charm on her, and she’d cave.
I felt like a complete ass.
She was a comet, brightly lit, that would streak across my life’s sky only a handful of times. I wasn’t meant to hold a comet. I was only meant to admire her. To watch her longingly from a distance and dream about the next time I’d be gobsmacked.
Because that was what comets did. They wowed you. Dazzled you. Left you.
I didn’t get left. I left. It was easier that way. Less sloppy. No feelings involved. It was simple pleasure and nothing more.
Nothing would be simple with Charlotte. Nothing.
I needed to keep reminding myself of that before I went and broke all of my own rules.
~Charlie Williams

I swear he had to be able to hear my heart pounding inside my chest as I held my breath. Every one of his words cleared my doubt like a cool breeze blowing through a field of smoke. He was a gentleman deep down, and he did have good intentions for me. And that made him even more dangerous, because I knew my heart, and I knew it wasn’t going to win a game of tug-o-war with my brain.
He was a magnet. I couldn’t look away from his openly tender gaze. All I could think was that everyone made at least one life-changing decision in their life—whether it was a choice to turn left instead of right and ending up down the wrong street at the wrong time, or a choice to hold the elevator door for someone and they ended up becoming the person of their dreams.
~Charlotte Mackay

The Paper Year: A Psychological Thriller With An Ending You'll Never See Coming

Kat's rating: 3 of 5 stars

*** I voluntarily reviewed this book, I gained no monetary incentives nor was I specifically requested to review the book, these are my honest ramblings and I hope you enjoy reading them - kat***

Okay - I have loved Avery Asters Manhattanites since winning a paperback of Yours Truly, Taddy I have read both series, they are hot, fast and funny.

I applaud Avery for deciding to write something different, I enjoyed it - BUT...
The story is hashed out in short form at the beginning - supposedly I guess to get the reader excited for the story.

[quote] nail-biting suspense and potent storytelling, THE PAPER YEAR will keep you on the edge of your seat with an unforgettable cast of Characters who are compelled to do the unthinkable to survive[Unquote]

It's not quite as good as those first two series nor is it very twisted/ suspenseful... I am sorry to say but I never felt like biting my nails or being on the edge of my seat ( or sitting up in bed - that's where I was when I was reading it) - flicking pages fast yes, feeling like that no - sorry Avery, but Lily Whites Wake to Dream - that was suspenseful that had me nail-biting.

The book starts to get there but I think it needs a bit more depth, I read this in 3 hours - 141 pages ( I was engrossed wanting to know what happened, that is for sure) but I think this could have been a higher star book if there had been more - more 'accidents' or situations, more depth into the situations our character was put in, more about the apparent sudden change of heart our supposedly in love husband did ( he was not very supportive of his wife at all!).

It does have the same flavour of the Manhattanites, Sutton Place is Manhattan's premiere cooperative

Our main character is psychotherapist Piper Adler , she thinks their life will be perfect now that they have moved into the garden apartment at 'The Barcley' with her new husband, Boden - they got it cheap because they are going to blast the 'poo' (Amazon friendly word) out of the basement when the underground tunnel extension is done (All I could imagine was the building falling down, I'd never buy an apartment that they were going to do that to!)

The characters are listed in the beginning... I guess to give you an idea to who you think may have 'done it'.

Piper - Psychotherapist, married to Boden - an investment banker, who are trying to adopt because Piper can't have kids, they have their pooch Orlane - yes he is down in the cast of characters. as a soft coated wheaten terrier (had to search the tinternet to see what the heck dog it was)
we have Reid - the gay neighbour - who walks Orlane in the afternoons. Maxine who is the realtor who lives in the Penthouse. Jana - Afro-Dutch supermodel and mother her house husband Hollis. Carmine the doorman and Keely who is a patient of Pipers.

So In the end, ignoring the hype, I would say its deserving the 3 star, I enjoyed the book, you are kept guessing to who would want to ruin Piper's life, and the characters have enough going on that each one of them looks a bit guilty.
It was, just... not enough, as I said above that all this 'hype' in the blurb, has not helped the book. the Epilogue is over too fast as well. If more time was put into the storyline, more incidents and more depth into what Piper was going through psychologically then it would have been a higher rating.

Also how Piper could forgive Boden so quickly was beyond me, he was so quick to leave her, so cruel to her when she is told she can no longer adopt due to the situation with her hospitalisation.

But that's my personal view on how a husband and wife should act (but I have more experience on that, married for 31 years!)

Give the book a go and see what you think, the writing style is good as always, the book doesn't have any of the humor nor does it have any sex in it, so be warned those who are thinking that it will do.

excerpt

I shout for help, hoping someone, anyone, hears me.

Everyone is gone. They heeded the warning and left hours ago.

Glancing down at the watch my husband gave me when we first married, I notice the time: ten minutes to eight. I’m fucked.

Any minute now the demolition crew will blow this basement into a gazillion pieces. I imagine my body combusting like an overcooked dinner that had been left in the microwave for far too long on the highest power. My arms would be found somewhere on FDR Drive. My legs would smack the roof of a nearby cab. I thought about my dentist, Dr. Sabbagh, having to identify my skull using dental records. And my mother in Westchester; I can already hear her saying, “I told Piper she should’ve never gotten married to someone as good-looking as Boden Adler.”

My hands, cut and bloody from fighting while trying to defend myself, start to shake uncontrollably. Reaching for the edge of the cage that I’m locked into, I throw myself onto the mesh metal with every ounce of energy left inside me, praying the door comes loose.

Locked from the other side, it doesn’t budge.

Fear pounds in my heart, blood thumps through my ears. The florescent lights that have given me hope like a warm blanket for the last hour fade to darkness.

Exhausted, I surrender, collapsing onto the cold cement floor.

“You got your chance. You should’ve left when I told you,” the voice yells from the top of the stairs. “Goodbye.”

Never in a million years did I think I’d die like this.

Paralegal Daisy Sinclair works for a well-known successful criminal defense attorney in downtown Fort Worth. She works hard and plays even harder, but has a code to never mix business with pleasure. This code is tested when her boss hires Warren Cole as a criminal investigator to partner with her in a case defending a prominent figure against a double murder charge.

Getting Him Off Quickly (Getting Him Off, #1)Getting Him Off Quickly by C.R. Lemons
Jenni's rating: 5 of 5 stars

***I voluntarily reviewed this book for Katsindiebookblog, and I gained no monetary incentives nor was I specifically requested to review the book.*** I can honestly say I was surprised when I read this story. I was expecting something totally different after I saw what the title was. However, within Chapter 2, I believe, I was able to figure out why it was named this. Now the cover, not a huge fan of it, but not something I would take off points for. All in all it was a really great mystery, erotic book. There were many twists and turns as well as plenty of action, in and out of the bedroom!
You are introduced to Daisy, a sassy paralegal for a pretty famous lawyer. She’s not one to have relationships due to her busy schedule. She doesn’t feel she can devote the proper time that a relationship deserves. She does have a “friends with benefits” if needed, as well as a few one night stands here and there. Daisy still gets all the pleasure she needs, especially after a hard day at work. It all changes for her when one night she is planning on a one night stand with a fabulous Greek God, till she gets a call for work. She gets told to be in work a little early as they are getting a new investigator to help them out. Well when she walks into work the next day, guess who is standing in the office? The Greek God! These two get put together to work on a murder case, but are they able to keep things quiet between them so they can solve this case? Or will the heat between them be too much to handle? Not only that, but can they keep themselves alive in order to solve this murder?
There is so much going on in this book, not in a clutter way, that will keep you on your toes. Can you figure out who the murderer is? I know I couldn’t. Good thing paralegal Daisy and Investigator Warren were on the case! Enjoy this fabulous read, I know I did!
