Jenni's Review: Broken Protocols by Dale Mayer @DaleMayer ‏

Blurb

Dani’s been through a year of hell…

Just as it’s getting better, she’s tossed forward through time with her orange Persian cat, Charmin Marvin, clutched in her arms. They’re dropped into a few centuries into the future. There’s nothing she can do to stop it, and it’s impossible to go back.

And then it gets worse…

A year of government regulation is easing, and Levi Blackburn is feeling back in control. If he can keep his reckless brother in check, everything will be perfect. But while he’s been protecting Milo from the government, Milo’s been busy working on a present for him…

The present is Dani, only she comes with a snarky cat who suddenly starts talking…and doesn’t know when to shut up.

In an age where breaking protocols have severe consequences, things go wrong, putting them all in danger…

Broken Protocols (Charmin Marvin, #1)Broken Protocols by Dale Mayer
Jenni's rating: 4 of 5 stars

I am giving this review on behalf of Kats Book Promotions/ Katsindiebookblog. This was quite an interesting read, I’m not too big on sci-fi but this had its good moments with humor and romance. Dani and her cat Charmin Marvin, a very interesting name for a cat. But wait for it….. The kitty talks! So you have a talking kitty, a trip to the future, and a look-alike of a crappy ex-boyfriend. There is also a sexy Levi, who I believe is a perfect match for Dani.
I’m hoping that this will continue in a series, as I have many questions that were left unanswered. All in all, though, it was a great quick read. A great work in progress for a HEA. If you want to step out of your normal typical read of paranormals, romances, and mysteries, this will be a great read for you. I know I enjoyed it myself as well of stepping out of my norm reads.

Death's Echo (The Complex)Death's Echo by Rachel M. Raithby
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

*** I Beta Read this book, before the final edit.***

Rachel M Raithby has ventured into a slightly different genre with Death's Echo, with its Sci-fi off world vibe, but it was an easy read, we get to experience the struggles that Aqulla Dayshon, a Banshee who has to fight her very nature to survive in The Complex, with Death's Echo surrounding her she finds each day a torment, will this drive her to madness? Will she give in to the insistent echos of the victims demanding that she give them their justice?

I really liked Aqulla, she was a strong character who had to deal with a never ending pressure of being surrounded by other Meta's and Human's who had killed, trying to survive as best she could, in the end she has to let someone in, she never suspected she would fall for him, but he was someone to lean on, her heart demanded it, but giving into her heart may just have put them both in danger.

I don't want to spoil this book so I am not going to give much more.

It has romance and a HEA that Rachel always promises to give us, its got suspense and action, I guess the only downside was it was a Novella, and soon I had finished it and I didn't want to, I wanted to stay in this world, Rachel had written.

I look forward to reading the final version, as I didn't actually get to read the Epilogue, but I was promised there was a HEA! and I will update my review then.

***I voluntarily reviewed this book for Katsindiebookblog, and I gained no monetary incentives nor was I specifically requested to review the book.***

Another great read by Rachel, stepping away from some paranormal you are thrown into a bit of Sci-Fi, I’m highly impressed by the diversity of this great author! There aren’t too many reads out there that involve Banshees, but when I do see them, I love seeing how authors interpret them and I was not disappointed here. Aqulla is doing everything she can to survive The CompleX. However in the process, she seems to be drawn to someone she least expects, but in doing so it seems to have put both of their lives in danger. Can the battle be won, can an HEA happen?
This is a short story which explains what The CompleX is and what exactly are Death’s Echo’s. Hopefully, this is a brief of what could be coming in the future from Rachel? One can only hope!

Review

Moon Mark (Mark, #2)

Moon Mark by Scarlett Dawn

Kat's rating: 3 of 5 stars

*** Gifted in exchange for my honest review ***

I enjoyed this book, the story was interesting but it being a novella means that there is just not enough time/ word count for the storyline to be full enough to give the story Arc justice.

This is Book 2 but it is sold as a standalone so as such you should be given enough information to get the reader involved.

There are 3 worlds Joyal which is where the descendants of Earth live, Kireg where the white haired skinned inhabitants can mind read/ manipulate and Mian - not sure what they did other than attack Joyal at some point of the story.

Madeline the main character is sent off as a tribute to the feared Kireg, but when she arrives she finds a Civil war and although at first she is 'rescued by the rebels' they are then captured by the Dynasty, the current rulers... experimented on and paired with the leader Geo of the rebels has some unexpected revelations.

The first part up to chapter 10 had me turning the pages gripped into what Madaline would do to survive, she was a gutsy character that managed to deal with a lot considering Joyal do not touch/embrace or have sex anymore ( Yeah shudder lol) but then at chapter 10 it just Skipped into the future... Was I confused - yes, I went back a few pages and nope I didn't miss anything, we just skip to where she is escaping Kireg...

She is helped by Braita what I am assuming is the character from book 1 by the looks of some of the reviews I have read.

This is where writing a novella can sometimes be a hindrance to a story, if this book had a little more background information it would have made more sense for me and would have more than likely gotten a higher score.
But in the end, I did enjoy the read, but personally, I think you would be better reading book 1 in this Mark Series.

I will have to go check out book 1 as I did enjoy this world, the characters, and the fast paced action.

Cold Mark By Scarlett Dawn #Review #Scifi @ScarlettDawnUSA

I reviewed the book with the cover that has the 3 characters, I prefer the single model cover, (my preference of course, as I feel its a much nicer cover, but the other told the reader what to expect and looks quite sci-fi'sh and is the one that is on the Amazon version too. It also looks like we are getting another book in this series this year so I will keep my eyes out for it.

Cold Mark (Mark, #1)Cold Mark by Scarlett Dawn
Kat's rating: 3 of 5 stars

*** I voluntarily reviewed this book, I gained no monetary incentives nor was I specifically requested to review the book, these are my honest ramblings and I hope you enjoy reading them - kat***

There are 3 worlds Joyal which is where the descendants of Earth live, Kireg where the white-haired skinned inhabitants can mind read/ manipulate and Mian - A Warrior breed that have pointy ears, and have glowing eyes.

Joyal don't touch/embrace or have sex anymore ( Yeah shudder lol) Braita Valorn and her friend Jax are sold off as slaves by the corrupt President of Joyal, with no choice and no chance at saying goodbye to friends they are sent to Mian, in space suits with a limited supply of oxygen! what a start to a new life.

It's a good job that Braita and Jax were being trained as soldiers, it comes in very handy when they arrive on the planet.

I liked this story at the start, Braita survives and is sent to live with 2 men (the Plumas - men - live in pairs and have harems.)
She is their Soulmate, and can't be too far away from them physically, but treat her more like a pet, and when she finally figures out why she runs away... and eventually into the hands of Jax's owners, Pluma leaders of the East.

OK I know I was reading an ARC so the typos I will ignore, but the flow of the story gets confusing in places especially in regards of the soulmates, and the way no human have skin to skin contact anymore, which it seems neither Braita or Jax have a problem with when they land, after 18 yrs of no contact!.

I am not going to reveal too much, I don't do spoilers.

There isn't much sex in this book (surprising for Scarlett), so be advise if you were thinking you were going to get some group sex or something.

Like I said, I enjoyed the premise, and the world that Scarlett has created, but I feel that after reading other books of the authors, it could have been much better, so it gets a 3 star from me.

Bound (The Caelian Cycle #2)Bound by Donnielle Tyner
Kat's rating: 4 of 5 stars

*** Gifted in exchange for my honest review ***

So this is Book 2 of this series and I loved the last book, its a story where a meteor has changed the dna of some humans so they are multi hued and have powers, a bit like the X-men, if I was trying to give an example of powers etc.

Sadie's powers were late to develop but when they did they caused a whole heck of trouble for her and St Vincent's the orphanage she had grown up in.

In book 2 we have Sadie in the HCA (Human Caelian Alliance) Underground, training and set on vengeance for the actions caused by her Grandfathers actions (sorry for being cryptic but I don't want to spoil book 1 if you have not read it yet)

The training is intense and she is having difficulties with the cold shoulder she recieves from Kian, the Caelian who came to rescue her in Book 1, Sadie has feelings for Kian, but she hasn't got the time to deal with relationship issues, and Kian's lack of understanding for why she wants revenge.

Being separated from her friends, and suffering from nightmares about the death of Michael, she makes a tentative friendship with a Caelian called Luca. Together the three are trying to find out more about Sadie's past, but other troubles are on the horizon, when her grandfather demands the return of Sadie to his clan, a secret is revealed which causes more discourse.

The book is full of action and tension as both factions try to force their views on the public majority, Caelian Registration is set to come into fruition, but will this then give shady government agencies or Caelian Clans free rein to use those with powers that can be used as weapons as they see fit?

When Kian plans a secret treat, it goes drastically wrong... Captured by the HPC (Human Purist Coalition) Will Sadie survive their torture? Sadies powers make her a prime target, and the HPC want to use that to their advantage - IF they can break her. Can the HCA save her? And at what cost?

Will Sadie get through this tormentalous time or will she be forever bound to be a weapon to be wielded by whomever has her in their clutches?

Warning - Cliffhanger will leave you begging for Ms Tyner to hurry up with the final book in the series, but it is due for release soon ( I am waiting impatiently)

I enjoyed this second installment, the characters are interesting, the dynamics of the story line keep you glued to the book, and leaves you wanting more.

Bound (The Caelian Cycle #2)Bound by Donnielle Tyner
Jenni's rating: 5 of 5 stars

***Review has been gifted in exchange for my honest opinion and on behalf of Kats Book Promotions/ Katsindiebookblog.***

So yeah.. Book 1 I just absolutely fell in love with, questioning whether Book 2 would hold up to my expectations.. All I can say is WOW.. This book did that PLUS more! This series just keeps getting better and better.

You are given plenty of answers that left you questioning in book 1, but still left with plenty of mystery for the next book.

Sadie is now living in the Underground, away from her friends in the orphanage. She starts training so she can do whatever it takes to take down her grandfather. You are meeting new characters in play, especially Luca. Who Kian is not a huge fan in the beginning. But are they all willing to come together when it comes to the matter at hand, taking down Miles? He takes it upon himself to hit Sadie where it hurts. Will she fight for what is hers, or will she freeze up, even after all her new found training?

Yet again, you are left with a major cliffhanger. If it can be done at a right spot, than this spot is perfect. I know some hate cliffhangers, but I’m a glutton for punishment so I can’t help but to love them. It gets me thinking on what can happen next, even though I’m usually wrong! Book 3 needs to hurry up! I’m in a desperate need for it!

During WW1, a meteorite crashed, releasing a mist that changed the DNA of all who were exposed. One hundred years has passed and society is divided between the Norms and the Caelians, whose changed DNA awakened dormant gifts, called Talents.

Sadie is over it!

She’s an orphan, her boyfriend was murdered, and she’s the only Caelian at St. Vincent’s without a Talent. Once she turns 18, there will be no place for her in the world. That is, until a chance encounter with Kian, a Caelian boy who makes her feel uncomfortable and alive at the same time.

Secrets of her past are uncovered and Sadie’s latent, rare Talent is exposed. With great power comes the hunters, hired by an egomaniac who wants to use Sadie’s power to establish Caelian dominance. On the run with Kian and her friends, Sadie will have to decide: hide or fight.

Will Sadie accept her new reality or will she stay lost?

Hello! Donnielle here, obviously. I really don't like talking about myself, so lets get this party started. I spend most of my free time writing, but when I’m not writing, I spend my time reading, binge watching Netflix, homeschooling my two children, and hanging out with my husband.

A few fun facts about me:

1. I began writing when I was in junior high. A teacher approached me with a poetry book and I fell in love. Writing poetry has helped me express myself through some of the darkest times in my life.

2. I am always reading something and own hundreds of eBooks. I thank the technology gods for the invention of e-readers. Series are my favorite. I love it when I feel like I cannot stop reading a book. My favorite genre is sci-fi and paranormal.

3. I am a HUGE nerd and enjoy every medium of nerdom from comic books to Magic! The Gathering.

4. I am a serious introvert and need plenty of alone time so I don’t go insane. Seriously! I will cut someone if they cut in to my “me” time.

5. I have a passion for holistic medicine and create many of my own household products. My kids and husband will ask for some “oils” when they aren’t feeling well. I love growing herbs to make my own blends of herbal tea.

6. I read YA almost exclusively. There is just something about it that calls to my heart above other genres.

7. When I read paranormal it’s either about shifters or faeries.

8. Writing has always been a passion and a dream. I had many jobs and they never fulfilled me the way writing has.
