Abandoned by her birth parents and ignored by her adoptive family, Maddy Page believes she is unlovable. She only allows herself to dream of falling in love. That changes when she meets MJ; handsome and kind, MJ penetrates Maddy’s defenses. Maddy soon finds herself confiding in MJ like she has with no one else, revealing secrets even her closest friends don’t know. He makes her feel safe—a feeling she’s never experienced except in her dreams.
When Maddy witnesses MJ disappear and reappear in thin air, she realizes she might have been wrong about him. He could be dangerous—maybe even a killer. Determined to uncover the truth of who—or what—MJ is, Maddy ignores her instinct to run. But she soon realizes that getting close to MJ could cost more than a broken heart—it could cost Maddy her soul.
Laurie Wetzel has always loved reading and writing. But it wasn’t until a New Years Resolution in 2011 that she shared her dream of being a writer with her husband. He read the first draft of Unclaimed and told her that she needed to follow her dream. Three years and many drafts later Unclaimed is ready to be shared with the world.
Do you have any strange writing habits (like standing on your head or writing in the shower)?I play with my hair a lot when I’m deep in the writing process. I don’t know why, but it helps me concentrate.
Just as your books inspire authors, what authors have inspired you to write?
I got back into my love of writing when several series that I was . . . obsessed with, ended at about the same time. Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, and Twilight. Yes, I love Twilight. They left a huge void and I tried to fill it with other books, but none of them captured me as much as they did. Eventually I decided to write my own story.
How important are names to you in your books? Do you choose the names based on liking the way it sounds or the meaning? Do you have any name choosing resources you recommend?
A lot of the names stem from my life. Maddy, my MC, is a name my husband and I have always liked for daughter. We were blessed with two sons, so I decided to call her Maddy since the book is basically another baby. Most of the other names are the names of my relatives and friends. I think they enjoy being a part of the story—even the ones who are the victims of my killer.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
I would love to live out in the country. Have a couple acres so my husband and sons can play on the 4 wheelers and hunt. I can have a nice quiet place to work on my 20th book. And maybe by then I will have talked my hubs into two more kids. If you’re going to dream, might as well dream big ;)
Were you already a great writer? Have you always like to write?
I’ve always loved to write, but I was bullied for it in school. Stupidly, I wasted many years listening to their voice instead of my own. Now I’m following my dreams and absolutely loving it!
Are you a plotter or a pantster?
I have a general idea of where I want the story to go, but I’m not strict about following it. My characters take the lead and I’m flying over the keyboard trying to get it all down so I don’t get left in the dust.
Is there a certain type of scene that's harder for you to write than others? Love? Action? Racy?
I haven’t attempted it yet, but I think a racy scene would be the hardest. Out of all the scenes you don’t want to mess up, that one is probably the biggest. Plus, there is always that awkwardness of wondering how much of that came from inspirational things like books and movies, and how much of it is based on the author’s personal experiences. The thought of people I know reading one of my scenes like that already has me cringing.
Is this your first book? How many books have you written prior (if any?)
Unclaimed is my first book. It is a series and the second book is already with my critique partners and beta readers. Book 2 will be out in 2015, though I don’t have a date at this time.
What are you working on now? What is your next project?
In my spare time I’ve been working on a fantasy series that I’m really excited about. It won first place in a writing contest for all books written during the 2013 NaNoWriMo contest. I would like to publish the first book in 2015 as well.
