Review

Forever Fit and Flexible: Feeling Fabulous at Fifty and Beyond
by Cheryl L. Ilov
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

*** I volunteered to review this Advanced Readers Copy, I received no monetary incentive for this review, these are my honest thoughts, ramblings and I try not to spoil the book for a reader, it's JUST purely my thoughts after reading it - take them as they are but I always advise you to read a sample as you can on most ebook sites - hopefully this statement appeases Amazon and their constant changes in their T&Cs***

I enjoyed reading the Author Cheryl L Ilov's preface to this book, Cheryl begins with a very candid and at times quite humorous account of her early life from childhood to when she founded her fitness system. The account was quite spooky as I had a lot of "oMG that sounds just like me" moments. from being a stick of a child to now having pain from injuries caused from riding accidents.

What Cheryl explains made complete sense to me and I read on hoping to find a simple solution to help me get fitter and more flexible.

I am one of those skinny unfit people you see, I used to do lots of activities that kept me fit, but now I find that when I try to do what I used to I often end up feeling worse and give up.

When you get to 50% the book goes on to the exercises that are designed to help you learn to read your body, how you sit, how you stand and how to strengthen your body and in turn become more flexible.

At this point the book became difficult to read for me, I am a visual learner, I would have to read a passage more than once, as I couldn't quite visualize what i was supposed to be doing.

I feel that a few sketches would have made this book more user-friendly after all this is a fitness book and most that I have read in the past all had images or drawings of the exercises. In this world of Ebooks, a simple Hyperlink to a video would also work.

So that is what I did, I went to my computer and searched for any Videos, I couldn't find any from the author but I have bookmarked some on the Feldenkrais Method® to help me understand the exercises better.

As I write this review, I have obviously not had time to say whether the systems Cheryl prescribes has had any effect on my fitness, but her words have given me encouragement to try again, take it slow and listen to my body.

The book has chapters on Balance, Movement, Exercise and Nutrition as well as a conclusion on what keep you motivated on your journey towards better fitness.

The Authors personal voice gives a friendly but helpful note to the advice given in the pages,as she shares her experiences and those of her clients, whether they succeeded or hit a bump on the fitness road.
Forever Fit and Flexible has a good voice, its well written and edited, and I think other than adding some links or images for the exercises its a good guide for those who are looking to get moving again without damaging themselves going to a Spin class.

Cheryl Ilov has always been drawn to health and wellness, the biological sciences, and movement arts, including classical ballet. She began her professional life as a respiratory therapist, and after seventeen years of practice, she returned to school and earned her master's degree in physical therapy in 1996.
Cheryl discovered The Pilates Method in 1983, and once she began working as a physical therapist, she made the connection that Pilates presented a wonderful tool to help people of all ages recover from injuries and illnesses. She immediately began applying the principles of Pilates to her patients to improve their quality of life and level of function. In 1999, she founded Ilov Integrated Arts, specializing in Pilates-based rehabilitation. Cheryl had her first experience with The Feldenkrais Method® in 2000.
She began the required four-year training program to become a Feldenkrais practitioner in February 2006 and graduated in November 2009. During Cheryl's remarkable journey of learning, healing, and self-discovery, she also discovered a martial art called Ninpo Tai Jutsu. She fell in love with the art and the training as well as the powerful connection between Feldenkrais and martial arts and their incredible healing power.

Having personally experienced the anxiety of dealing with chronic pain, stress, and fatigue, she also understands the frustration of feeling out of control, gaining weight, and struggling to find a healthy, effective way to recover after devastating injuries. Cheryl has integrated her education, experience, and expertise to develop a program for people, regardless of their age or current level of function. It is her firm belief that anyone can be fit, flexible, healthy, vibrant, and energetic in their fifties, sixties, seventies, and beyond.
